Why You Need Strong Passwords
Weak passwords are one of the leading causes of data breaches and account compromise. A strong, randomly generated password is your first line of defense against hackers and automated attacks.
What Makes a Strong Password?
- Length — At least 12-16 characters. Longer is exponentially harder to crack.
- Character diversity — Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
- Randomness — Avoid dictionary words, personal info, and predictable patterns.
- Uniqueness — Never reuse passwords across accounts.
How Password Entropy Works
Password entropy measures randomness in bits. It's calculated as: log2(charset_size ^ length). A password using 95 printable ASCII characters at 16 characters long has about 105 bits of entropy — effectively uncrackable by brute force.
- < 28 bits — Weak: crackable in seconds
- 28-35 bits — Fair: crackable in hours
- 36-59 bits — Good: crackable in years
- 60-79 bits — Strong: crackable in centuries
- 80+ bits — Very Strong: effectively uncrackable
Password Best Practices
- Use a unique password for every account
- Use a password manager to store them securely
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible
- Never share passwords via email or chat
- Change passwords if a service reports a breach
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up or usage limits.
Are the generated passwords secure?
Yes. We use crypto.getRandomValues(), a cryptographically secure random number generator built into your browser. Passwords are generated entirely on your device — nothing is sent to any server.
Do you store my passwords?
No. All passwords are generated in your browser. We have no server, no database, and no way to see your passwords. The history shown on the page is session-only and disappears when you close the tab.
How long should my password be?
We recommend at least 16 characters. For high-security accounts (banking, email), consider 20+ characters. With all character types enabled, 16 characters provides over 100 bits of entropy.
